It is easy to think of Williamsburg as all history, but spend a little time here and you will find the outdoors is just as much a part of daily life. Between the rivers, the parks, and miles of trails, there is plenty of room to breathe.
On the water
The James and York rivers frame the region, with public access points for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Nearby lakes and creeks add quiet spots to launch a canoe or cast a line. If you love being near the water, the Triangle delivers without the crowds of the coast.
On the trails
The Virginia Capital Trail runs more than 50 miles between Williamsburg and Richmond, a paved path popular with cyclists and runners that follows the historic Route 5 corridor. Closer to home, Freedom Park, York River State Park, and the Colonial Parkway offer routes through woods, wetlands, and along the shoreline.
In the parks
Local and county parks round things out with open fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, and seasonal programs. Add in the region's gardens and the grounds of the Historic Area, and there is no shortage of places to spend a bright afternoon.
For a lot of the people I work with, this balance is the whole point... history and culture on one side, room to roam on the other. If an active, outdoor-friendly lifestyle is on your list, I can point you toward the areas that put it closest at hand.
